Trout fishing tradition runs strongly through the Yorkshire Fly Fishers Club. The renowned proponent of the north country style, Thomas Evan Pritt, was instrumental in forming the club in the 19th century and some of the waters which he helped to secure are held to this day. It is little wonder then that several of our beats – such as those on the Ure, Eden and Eamont – are perfectly suited to deployment of traditional wet fly and north country spider tactics. It is a joy to this day to doff the cap to the old masters’ techniques on waters which have seen their use through several generations of flyfishers, and such an approach proves as effective today as it always has.
However, as rewarding as it is to fish using the ‘old ways’, our current crop of enlightened trout anglers are just as likely to be found deploying a diverse range of techniques, from dry fly to sighted rising fish, to the many variations of nymph presentations and even streamer tactics. It is true that the Yorkshire Fly Fishers Club waters have characteristics which suit all of the above – from overgrown small stream fishing to large open spate river reaches and everything in between.
There is something for everyone here: we have beats with pleasing numbers of smaller fish…..and some with a less dense population of often large wild trout which may require considerable skill (and a little luck) to catch. Some places may be open and offer easy access to the water and ample casting room, others are tree-lined and intimate and suit anglers who are undaunted by a little ‘jungle warfare’. So all abilities are catered for; and whether your idea of a good fishing day is to catch plenty of smaller trout, or have the chance of a genuine trophy trout, or merely just to be out there in beautiful countryside, soaking up the experience, then Yorkshire Fly Fishers Club can provide that opportunity on a number of sought-after river beats in the north of England. Membership numbers are strictly limited and it is fair to say that our waters are lightly fished – a real paradise for the keen trout angler!
We do not stock and haven’t done so for many years. Our ethos is one of habitat-improvement and the nurturing of sustainable wild trout and grayling populations and the invertebrates upon which they feed. We are active supporters of local rivers trusts and our keepers and members alike maintain a watchful eye on the health of our rivers. We regularly monitor and record invertebrate abundance and we work with our riparian owners to improve habitat for breeding populations of native fish species. Members are asked to return records of their fishing days each season, which helps feed into an overall impression of the health of our fisheries. It is pleasing to report that currently, the quality of our trout fishing is as high as ever, with good numbers returned from all beats, including some really impressive fish of 4lb upwards – wild trout to equal those of nearly anywhere in Britain.
